Rama is called Maryadapurushottam and Jagatjanani Sita is considered to be a form of patriotism and Lakshmi*. In India whenever a reference is made to a happily married couple, a comparison is drawn to Ram-Sita. Ram and Sita are considered to be the ideal pair. Even though their marriage ran into trouble because of Ravan, their union is considered an ideal union.

The birth of Shri Ram and Sita is a very important event. Their birth and their entire life have been such an ideal that they are worshipped in the same form as they were several centuries ago i.e. Rama was born in Ayodhya at Dasaratha's house. At the same time, Sita was born from the earth and Janak, the king of Mithila became her father.

Sita Swayamvar Story

Sri Rama and Sita’s marriage is described in detail in the Ramayana which is written by Tulsidas. The story of their marriage begins in a very beautiful manner when they first meet in the flower garden. Sitaji falls in love with Ramji’s heart. Sita ji then prays to Goddess Parvati and seeks Lord Rama as her husband. The day of Sita's Swayamvar comes. King Janaka wanted a strong man to wed his daughter. So he lay a condition for Sita’s marriage. He announces that only the man who will be able to lift Shiva’s bow will be able to marry Sita. Their marriage is described very vividly in Ramayana.

Once when Sita ji was a small child, while playing she lifted the Shiva bow effortlessly. This astounded everyone as lifting the Shiva bow was by no means a small task. Given that Sita ji lifted it while she was just a child was even more impressive. When King Janak noticed this he vowed to marry Sita to a groom who is equivalent to her and thus should be able to lift the Shiva bow without much struggle.

Once Sita ji becomes eligible for marriage, Raja Janak declares her Swayamwar and sends invites to princes across all the kingdoms. The same invite reaches Rishi Vishwamitra in the forests. Rishi Vishwamitra along with Ram and Lakshma reach Janakpuri to participate in the Swayamvara. Ram and Sita first meet in a Pushpavatika and again during the Swayamvar where an amazing spectacle takes place. Each of the invited princes tries to lift the bow as per King Janak’s instructions. They all try to show their might but no one succeeds. The princes are neither able to lift the bow nor are they able to load the arrow.

This situation disappoints King Janak gravely. He gets frustrated that none of the princes could lift the Shiva bow. Finally on the command of his Guru Lord Rama attempts to lift the bow and manages to do so effortlessly. In fact, the bow breaks in his hand. The minute the bow breaks Ram's marriage to Sita gets solemnised.
