It is considered to be inauspicious to watch Moon on Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapad month. This Chaturthi is also known as Kalanka Chauth. It is believed that Lord Krishna was cursed with Mithya kalanka on this day because of watching the Moon.

Kalanka Chauth Story

A person named Satrajit lives in Dwarkapuri. He was extremely devoted to Lord Sun. Lord Sun was impressed with his devotion and gave him a priceless Gem. Due to the auspicious effects of this gem, Satrajit did not fear anything and was free from all material desires. Once, Lord Krishna thought about giving a gem to King Ugrasen. Satrajit came to know about this and gave the gem to his brother, Prasen.

Prasen was killed during a hunting expedition by a Lion. Jambavant saw the gem in the Lion’s mouth and killed him to grab the gem. When the subjects of Dwarkapuri came to know about this, they thought that Lord Krishna had killed Prasen. Lord Krishna was distressed when he came to know about this and went to find out Prasen.

Lord Krishna found Prasen’s dead body, a Lion’s head and Jambavant’s footsteps. He met Jambavant and asked him about the gem. Jambavant told him his side of the story. Jambavant married his daughter, Jambavanti, to Lord Krishna and gave him the gem as a gift.

When the subjects came to know about the truth, they asked for forgiveness. Therefore, this blame was a rumour. However, even Lord Krishna was accused because he saw the Moon that day and was disrespected.
